The Ship from Simnel Street

Beautiful & straight from the heart~
"The worst day of Mrs. Oliver's life was when Polly told her she wants to marry a soldier"

Life at the bakery on Simnel Street has always been simple, comfortable, safe & secure for the daughters of the Master Baker, Polly & Susannah Oliver. Yet when the girls begin to grow up, events outside the bakery changes each of their lives (differently) forever...

Mrs. Oliver has always wanted the best for her 2 daughters, her heart being set on finding them respectable husbands. But against her wishes, & to the very dismay of Mrs. Oliver, Polly falls in love with a simple rifleman. When he is shipped off to the war in Spain, Polly's mother is sure she'll forget him. Yet she underestimates polly's determination, stubborness & loyalty to true love. Thus, Polly decides to go search for her rifleman in midst of the war...involving the entire town, neighbors, friends, all try to get a word to the vanished army & their beloved Polly...

A beautiful book which is written straight from the heart. Old nursery rhymes, children 'street' songs, recipes from rye bread to plum cakes all adds to the autencity of the book.

"Marry a grocer, eat well all yr life, marry a tinker, tread dry as his wife, marry a baker, never lack bread, marry a draper, quilts for yr bed. Marry a ploughboy, knee deep in mire, marry a tinker, blackended by fire, marry a sailor, salt in yr eye, marry a soldier, widow u'll die"

The Mayo Clinic William-Sonoma Cookbook: Simple Solutions for Eating Well
Published in Hardcover by Oxmoor House (June, 2002)
Authors: The Mayo Clinic, Ray Overton, Leigh Beisch, and John Phillip Carroll

How much lemon zest can a person eat?
I use this book when I need a quick side dish or a simple entree. But the most of the recipes are pretty boring and bland. My other "healthy cooking" books make wholesome food delicious by using creative seasonings. The Mayo Clinic puts the grated zest of a citrus fruit in every other recipe and leaves it at that. Haven't they ever heard of herbs and spices?

Non-fat fads - is there an end to it?
There are lots of wonderful recipes in this beautifully edited book, my only concern is the use of non-stick sprays instead of real and HEALTHY fats. I just wonder when this whole fat scare will end - are we to believe that using artificial but low - fat products is going to make us healthy? Otherwise, a very enjoyable cookbook....

Fabulous tasting, healthy meals that anyone can prepare
In less than one week this has become my favorite cookbook in an already extensive collection. Full-color, glossy photos accompany each recipe. Every recipe is easy to prepare, healthy and flavorful. I served a five-course meal to guests on a weeknight after work. They raved about the entire meal and told others, who have been sending e-mails asking for the name of the cookbook.

My step-daughter, who does not cook frequently, prepared a fabulous soup and an exquisite vegetarian entry while caring for a three-month old child. In other words, the recipes are simple to prepare and practical for working people. As a graduate of the Mayo Medical School and a practicing Family Physician, she also attested to the qualifications of the Mayo co-author and to the nutritional content of the recipes.

If you want to eat healthy meals, but think that means giving up great tasting food, the recipes in this cookbook will convince you otherwise. Most items can be found even in small-town grocery stores, though a few may require a broader search. Any urban or suburban market will carry all of the ingredients required.

I am buying this as a holiday gift for everyone on my list.

Cowboy Bits & Spurs

Misrepresentation in Collecting
I am an expert in the fields about which this book was written. Yet I have been repeatedly surprised to find not only misidentifications in the text but many gross inaccuracies. The names of spur makers and styles are often misstated. The values are not even close to being accurate. Yet the author has cited her affiliation with the NBSSCA,of which I am a member, as qualification for her authorship of this specialty book. I think it unfortunate that many who are searching for guidance in this area will make the assumption that such a guide is accurate and dependable. I would recommend to those interested in this field to rather consider,"Cowboy and Gunfighter Collectibles," by Bill Mackin or Jane Pattie's book on the Texas Spur Makers. Both of these volumes are compiled by authors with many years of experience and the collaboration of other experienced in the field. They are worth looking into.

Cowboy Bits and Spurs
This is such a great book! I actually bought this book for my Father in Law as a present, to look up his collectables and he loves this book and refer's to it all of the time. I recommend this book to any true-to-heart cowboy out there! The photography shown in this book is wonderful, showing many different styles of artwork. For any collector, this book is a MUST-have!

DISAPPOINTING
I purchased the book to learn about cowboy "collectables". However, even a novice like me can see modern items included and items reused in different photographs. This sheds doubt on all ares of the book.
